Using OutdoorActive

There are quite a few walking apps to help you discover routes and guide you along the way. My favourite is OutdoorActive (previously called ViewRanger). There’s a free and two paid-for versions (click to view the differences).

I have the middle one (Pro) which costs £2.33/mth, but I’m sure the free version does everything most people need. And you can always upgrade later if you need more options.

Most walking apps use something called a GPX file. It’s a small text file containing geographic co-ordinates such as waypoints, tracks and routes. You can download a GPX file of a route from OA to use in the software or device of your choice.

Phones and other devices use GPS to work out your position, which stands for Global Positioning System. You don’t need a phone signal to follow a route as GPS relies on satellites rather than phone masts. But you will need either a wi-fi connection or a phone signal to download the map before you set off.

I’ve put all my Monsal Trail walks in an OA Collection. You can view them without having an account by clicking the button below. But you will need at least a free account to follow a route, or download a GPX file to use on another walking app.
